Domestic Violence (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2024
Public bill · Private Member · Presented
The main change would be to close domestic violence court hearings to almost everyone, so only court staff, people directly involved in the case, press representatives, and anyone the judge specifically allows could stay in the room. The verdict or decision, and any sentence, would still have to be announced in public. It matters because it gives extra privacy and protection to people involved in these cases, while still keeping the final outcome open and public. The law would take effect three months after it is passed, unless the Minister for Justice starts it earlier.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Domestic Violence Act 2018 by means of extending the restrictions on those present in courtroom proceedings, and to provide for related matters.
