Third-Party Funding Contracts (Certain Proceedings) Bill 2024
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The bill would allow people involved in certain kinds of cases to use third-party funding, where an outside funder pays some or all of the legal costs in return for a share of any winnings. It would remove the old rules that can make this kind of funding illegal or risky in cases about consumer rights, the environment and climate change, insolvency matters, and some personal debt cases. It also covers arbitration and mediation tied to those disputes. The aim is to make it easier for people and public-interest groups to bring these cases, especially where the cost of doing so would otherwise be too high.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide that the offence or tort of maintenance or champerty does not apply to certain proceedings; and to provide for related matters.
