Arts (Recognition of Comedy) (Amendment) Bill 2024
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would change the Arts Act 2003 so comedy is explicitly recognised as an art form, alongside areas like theatre, literature, music and film. It is aimed at stopping comedy from being left out of Arts Council funding and support, which the memorandum says has already happened for stand-up comedy. It matters because it could give comedians fair access to arts grants and development opportunities, and place comedy on the same footing as other recognised arts.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Arts Act 2003 to recognise the art of comedy.
