Houses of the Oireachtas (Members) Bill 2024

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The Houses of the Oireachtas (Members) Bill 2024 would let each House make rules allowing a member to formally note certain absences linked to caring for a baby or dealing with a humanitarian situation, including stillbirth. It would also widen access to extra secretarial support for members in those situations, and extend the support to either parent and to children up to two years old when the member becomes eligible. This matters because it would give more flexible, formal recognition to family and caring responsibilities for TDs and Senators, while moving these protections into primary legislation.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to facilitate the making of standing orders in relation to certain absences from each House of the Oireachtas, to amend the Oireachtas (Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices) (Secretarial Facilities) Regulations 2021 and for that purpose to extend the entitlement of members to additional secretarial facilities in certain circumstances, and to provide for related matters.
