Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill 2024

Public bill · Government · Presented

Changes sentencing rules for people who were under 18 when they committed murder, treason, or certain related offences, but had turned 18 before they were sentenced. It removes the automatic life sentence or other mandatory minimums in those cases, so a judge can treat them differently from adults. It also applies these changes to some older cases that are not yet finally resolved, to fix a constitutional problem identified by the High Court.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Criminal Justice Act 1990 as regards its application to the sentencing of persons, who, at the time of the commission by them of certain offences to which that Act applies, were under the age of 18 years; and to provide for related matters.
