Statute Law Revision Bill 2024

Public bill · Government · Presented

The bill would clean up Ireland’s older secondary law by repealing thousands of outdated or unused instruments, mainly from 1821 to 1860, and also any still-current instruments made before 1821 that were not already removed in 2015. It keeps a small number of important instruments in force, gives them clear official citations, and updates the rules for proving the existence of very old instruments in court using published or certified copies. It matters because it makes the statute book easier to understand, reduces legal confusion, and should lower legal and business costs.

Formal long title

An Act to provide for the revision of statute law by revoking, with the exception of certain instruments, every instrument made before 1 January 1861, to identify those instruments that are not being revoked by this Act, to assign citations to those instruments so as to facilitate their citation, to provide a means by which prima facie evidence of certain instruments may be given, and to provide for related matters.
