Public Health (Antacid Products) Bill 2024

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The Public Health (Antacid Products) Bill 2024 would require warning notices to be displayed wherever antacid products are sold or supplied to the public, including online, unless they are being sold only at wholesale level. The notices would have to explain the possible health risks of long-term antacid use, including that it may hide the symptoms of oesophageal and stomach cancers. It would also give the Health Products Regulatory Authority powers to inspect premises and records, appoint authorised officers, and enforce the rules through fixed penalties, prosecutions, and public naming of non-compliant sellers. It matters because it aims to give consumers clearer health warnings and tackle the risks of overuse or misuse of these products.

Formal long title

An Act to provide, in respect of antacid products sold or otherwise supplied, for warning notices to be displayed where such products are sold or otherwise supplied and so sold or supplied other than solely by way of wholesale, to provide for the failure to display such a notice, to provide for authorised officers and their functions and to provide for related matters.
