Pregnancy Loss (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2025
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would give employees a paid leave entitlement after a pregnancy loss, with a minimum period of five working days for the person who experienced the pregnancy and 2.5 working days for a parent in other cases. It would also strengthen workplace protection so someone cannot be dismissed, suspended, or given notice of termination while on that leave, and their employment rights continue as if they were still working. In addition, it would create an opt-in pregnancy loss register for recording these losses, with access tightly limited and not open to public searching. That matters because it gives practical support, legal protection, and a more respectful way to record a deeply personal event.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for a period of paid leave consequent upon the loss of a pregnancy and for that purpose to amend the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, to extend the protection against unfair dismissals conferred by the Unfair Dismissals Acts 1977 to 2015, and to provide for the consequential amendment of certain other Acts. Furthermore, an Act to provide for matters including the establishment of a register relating to the record of pregnancy loss and the maintenance of this opt-in register of pregnancy loss, which shall be closed to searching by members of the public.
