Domestic Violence (Free Travel Scheme) Bill 2025

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposed law would create a free travel scheme for people escaping domestic violence, so they can get away from an unsafe home or travel shortly after leaving. It would let eligible people get a travel pass for up to three months, with a possible three-month extension in exceptional cases, and the pass would work like the existing free travel scheme without revealing why it was issued. Applications would be assessed by approved support bodies, with the Department of Social Protection issuing the pass quickly once eligibility is confirmed. It would also require plain-language information in Irish, English, and the ten other most commonly spoken languages in Ireland, plus an annual report on how the scheme is working.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to establish a free travel scheme for victims fleeing domestic violence; and to provide for related matters.
