Energy Poverty Reduction (Use of Surplus Renewable Energy) Bill 2025

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

A Minister would have to publish a plan within six months for using surplus renewable energy to help people in energy poverty. The plan would need clear, time-bound targets, rising from 20% of surplus energy going to families in energy poverty by 2026 to 50% by 2030, along with measures, consultation with stakeholders, and regular updates to the Oireachtas. It matters because Ireland has a lot of renewable energy being wasted at times of low demand, while hundreds of thousands of households struggle to afford energy.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to require the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications to develop and publish a strategy to ensure that surplus renewable energy is utilised effectively, specifically for the benefit of people experiencing energy poverty, and to set targets for the utilisation of surplus renewable energy.
