Companies (Protection of Title: Accountant) Bill 2025

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Creates legal protection for the title “accountant” so that only people who belong to recognised accountancy bodies can use it. It would also make misuse of the title an offence, with fines or possible imprisonment, and give the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority responsibility for overseeing compliance. The aim is to prevent people from passing themselves off as qualified accountants, protect consumers, and strengthen trust in the profession.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to regulate the use of the title "accountant", to establish criteria for recognition, and to provide for offences and penalties for misuse of the title, and to provide for related matters.
