Gender Recognition (Amendment) (Prisons) Bill 2025

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would change the rules for prisons so that having a gender recognition certificate would not affect whether someone is treated as male or female for deciding single-sex prison accommodation. In practice, it would keep male and female prisoners in separate accommodation and restrict access to areas set aside for the other sex, including for people already in prison or already holding a certificate. It matters because it would override how legal gender recognition is used in the prison setting.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Gender Recognition Act 2015 to make provision for single-sex accommodation in prisons; and to provide for related matters.
