Education (Leave for Injuries) Bill 2025
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Education (Leave for Injuries) Bill 2025 would set minimum standards for any government scheme that gives paid leave to teachers and special needs assistants injured at work in recognised schools. It says such a scheme should be agreed with unions, cover medical and related costs, provide paid time off while a doctor certifies the person cannot return to work, and include support services such as psychological support. It also allows for early retirement in cases of long-term or permanent incapacity and says schools’ duties under health and safety law should be clearly set out. The aim is to make injury leave fairer, faster, and more consistent for school staff, including where injuries are caused by students.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to establish standards for any scheme maintained by the Minister for Education and Youth relating to the provision of leave of absence for teachers and special needs assistants who suffer certain injuries; and to provide for related matters.
