Irish Language Name and Address of the Person (Length Accent) Bill 2026
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
It would require public and private bodies to correct misspelled or “anglicised” Irish names and addresses when a person asks, including restoring missing fada marks, and it treats those errors as inaccurate records. It would also make regulators ensure that banks, utilities, telecoms and airlines let customers use the correct Irish form of their name and address from 2030, and it would tighten future postcode contracts so they respect Irish place names, especially in the Gaeltacht.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to protect accuracy in the use of Irish language names and addresses, including the length accenting of vowels, by facilitating the correction of records in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018, by placing a duty on regulators to ensure that the names and addresses of customers and service users are respected by January 1 2030, and by amending the legislation under which future contracts in respect of the national postcode system are regulated; and to provide for related matters.
