Electoral (Amendment) (Voting Age) Bill 2026
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Electoral (Amendment) (Voting Age) Bill 2026 would lower the voting registration age for European Parliament and local government elections from 18 to 16. It would let 16- and 17-year-olds register as electors for those elections, while leaving the rules for other elections unchanged. It matters because it would give younger people an earlier say in local and European decision-making.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Electoral Act 1992 to reduce the age at which a person may be registered as a European Parliament Elector, and a Local Government Elector, and to provide for related matters.
