Electricity Regulation (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2026

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would open up a clearer, stricter system for private electricity lines, allowing the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to approve, oversee and enforce safety rules for them. It would replace the current restrictive setup, set criteria for who can get permission to build a direct line, create faster decision-making, and keep a public register of approved lines. It matters because it could ease pressure on the grid, help more renewable energy and storage projects get built, and improve energy security and resilience.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Electricity Regulation Act 1999 to provide for the regulation of direct lines; and to provide for related matters.
