Online Safety (Recommender Algorithms) Bill 2026
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would stop video-sharing platforms from using recommendation algorithms for anyone under 18, or where a user’s age is unknown. For adults, it would ban recommendations based on profiling or sensitive personal data unless the user has clearly opted in, been given plain information about how the system works, and can easily change it. It would also require the online safety regulator’s code to be updated to match these rules, which matters because it would give people more control over what content platforms push at them, especially young users.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022 to regulate the use of recommender algorithms by video-sharing platform services.
