Prevention of Energy Wastage Bill 2026

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Aims to stop renewable electricity from going to waste when wind or solar farms are told to turn down output or cannot send power through the grid. It would require the Minister and the regulator to set up a scheme so that some of that unused clean electricity can be given to electricity customers at no cost, with priority for vulnerable households and people at risk of energy poverty. It matters because it links surplus green power to climate goals, just transition goals, and help with high electricity bills.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 to provide for the utilisation of curtailed and constrained renewable electricity in order to support the achievement of the national climate objective and carbon budgets, to advance a just transition, and to reduce energy poverty by facilitating access to lower‑cost renewable electricity for eligible electricity customers; and to provide for related matters.
