CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - USE OF ENGLISH IN “IRIS AN PHUIST.”

William Norton Mr. NORTON

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether, in view of Article 4 of the Constitution which provides that the "English language shall be equally recognised as an official language," he will arrange for the notification of all vacancies and appointments which are published in "Iris an Phuist," to be printed in English as well as in Irish.

Comment on this

The notification of vacancies and appointments in "Iris an Phuist" is a departmental notification and is printed in Irish only for the purpose of encouraging the Post Office staff to learn Irish. In response to these notifications there have been ample applications for vacant posts, and I see no reason for altering the practice, which is not considered unconstitutional.

Comment on this

Who does not consider it unconstitutional?

Comment on this

I do not, at any rate.

Comment on this

You do not?

Will the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs take the opinion of the Attorney-General on the matter?

Comment on this

He has done so.

Comment on this

Why did the Minister not say so?
