asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that owners of private cars are, in some instances, plying their vehicles for hire or reward; and if he will take steps to deal with this complaint which is a source of much dissatisfaction to owners of hackney cars.

Since petrol was made available for private motor cars in November last, a few complaints have been received by the Gárda Síochána alleging that private motor cars are carrying passengers for reward. These complaints have been investigated, but evidence to support a prosecution has been obtained in only one case. Appropriate proceedings are being taken in that case.
