asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the present position regarding net fishermen and others who were employed on rivers and lakes, and what compensation those men are entitled to, on account of net fishing being prohibited.

The abolition of freshwater netting upon a compensatory basis is provided for by Section 35 of the Fisheries Act, 1939, which section became operative as from 1st January, 1948. Payment of compensation (if any) will be made in accordance with the statute on the relevant facts obtaining in each case.
