asked the Minister for Education how heating and cleaning grants applicable to national schools are allocated; and if in view of their inadequacy, particularly for new schools, he will take steps to have these grants substantially increased.

Patrick John Hillery Dr. Hillery (Minister for Education) Fianna Fáil

The maximum grants payable by my Department towards the cost of heating and cleaning national schools are set out in a tabular statement which with your permission, a Cheann Chomhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

The grants are not intended to cover the total expenditure involved but to supplement the amounts provided from local sources.

I am satisfied that the present arrangement is satisfactory. The answer to the second part of the Deputy's question is therefore in the negative.

Following is the statement:

MAXIMUM GRANTS PAYABLE TOWARDS THE COST OF HEATING AND CLEANING NATIONAL SCHOOLS.

A. Classification Schools.

and so forth, allowing for every additional teacher on the recognised staff an additional £6 for heating and £3 for eleaning, etc.

B. Capitation Schools.

and so forth, allowing for every additional 100 units of average attendance, an additional £15 for heating and £8 for cleaning, etc.
