Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Possession of Offensive Weapons.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the concern and apprehension caused by the habit among some young people of carrying knives, chains and other offensive weapons as publicised on television on 10th February, 1968; and if he will sponsor broadcast talks on the dangers of this for the benefit of young people, parents, police and the general public.

As I stated in my speech on the Estimates for my Department in July, 1967, the Criminal Justice Bill, 1967, which deals with a number of matters, will contain provisions for the control of flick-knives and other offensive weapons. I expect that the full text of the Bill will be circulated within a month and Deputies will then have an early opportunity for a full debate.

I do not think that publicity of the kind mentioned in the question would have the desired effect.

Surely, having regard to the importance of this matter, it is imperative that we should have publicity of the kind advocated rather than adverse publicity?

Comment on this

We will have a very full opportunity to debate this matter in the House and this is the place where is should be debated.

While I am in full sympathy with the point of view expressed by the Deputy, would the Minister not impress on the Deputy that what he is saying is tantamount to an attempt at censuring RTE?

It is not my intention to interfere with Telefís Éireann. I am asking that Telefís Éireann be used to publicise this in the proper way. I have seen four flick knives on television and television should be used to discourage them.
