Following is the information requested:—

TOTAL AMOUNT BORROWED BY STATE COMPANIES (BY SOURCE) AND TOTAL AMOUNT REPAID DURING THE PERIOD 1ST APRIL, 1956 TO 31ST MARCH, 1968.

NOTES (i) The British & Irish Steam Packet Co. Ltd. was established in March, 1965. The period covered is 1st April, 1965 to 26th March, 1969.

(ii) The period covered in the case of Córas Iompair Éireann is 1st April, 1957 to 28th February, 1969.

(iii) Óstlanna Iompair Éireann was established in 1962. The assets taken over by OIE from CIE (hotel property) were made subject to lo account which at 31st March 1968 stood at £989,795. In addition the Company avails itself of seasonal bank overdrafts which at 31st March, 1968 stood at £112,766.

(iv) The total sum of £9,800,000 borrowed by Aer Lingus includes £866,000 subsequently re-lent by the Company.

Radio Telefís Éireann, which was established on 1st June, 1960, is the only such body under my jurisdiction. The total amount borrowed up to 31st March, 1968 was £2,100,000 including cash advances amounting to £1,851,000 and property valued at £249,000.

The total amount borrowed by State and semi-State bodies under the aegis of my Department during the period in question was £11,585,199 11s. Of this sum, £8,969,207 represents repayable advances from the Exchequer.

As stated in my replies to similar questions on earlier occasions, the latest being the 4th February, 1969, the bodies with which I am concerned receive support in the form of grant from my Department and, except by way of temporary bank overdraft, the question of borrowing does not arise.
