asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prosecutions for exceeding the 60 miles per hour speed limit up to the latest date for which figures are available.

The general speed limit of 60 mph was introduced on 1st April, 1969. In the ten-month period to 31st January, 1970, there were 1,111 prosecutions for exceeding the limit. In addition, cautions were administered in 687 cases where the limit was exceeded by only a very small margin.
