Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pedestrian Crossing Lights.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider providing a warning traffic light on the approach to a pedestrian-crossing as in France and other European countries.

Comment on this

Pedestrian crossings provided in this country are fitted with flashing beacons to attract the drivers' attention. Generally those in European countries do not have such beacons. I am satisfied that the flashing beacons give adequate warning and, accordingly, I do not consider that at present an additional warning light is necessary.

Comment on this

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that it is necessary, particularly in country towns, to have better lighting on the crossings themselves?

Comment on this

I quite agree.

Luke Belton Mr. L. Belton Fine Gael

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received any proposals for the conversion of the three pedestrian crossings on Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, Dublin into traffic light controlled crossings; and whether he is aware of the need for this step in view of the continuous heavy traffic on this main road.

Comment on this

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation acting at the request or with the consent of the Garda commissioner. There are no proposals before my Department in this matter.

Comment on this

We could do with a few more pedestrian crossings in various places in Dublin. I made representations but nothing was done. Of course, it was not Dún Laoghaire.
