asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction the payment arising out of the Labour Court award to the members of the Waterford City Fire Brigade; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Labour Court recommendation on the Waterford city firemen's claim represents a special increase and must therefore be considered in the context of the Government's pay policy for public sector employees and the constraints imposed by the present serious financial and economic difficulties.
