Ownership of the Grand and Royal Canals
The Minister said the Government would consider future ownership of the canals, currently vested in CIE, and agreed to press for a prompt decision. He confirmed that part of the Grand Canal had been transferred to Dublin Corporation, though he was unsure whether it was the section between Suir Road Bridge and James’ Street Harbour; the Deputy asked if the transfer was finalised.
asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the ownership of the Grand and Royal Canals has been transferred from CIE; and, if so, to whom.

I expect that the question of future ownership of the Grand and Royal Canals, which are at present vested in CIE, will be considered by the Government in the near future.

I appreciate what the Minister said, but this has gone on so long that there is a belief abroad that there is a great malaise over the development of our waterways which are deteriorating while we await the Government's decision. I would ask the Minister to push his Government colleagues for a quick decision.

(Dublin Central): Will the Minister give any indication if that part of the Grand Canal between Suir Road Bridge and James' Street Harbour has been transferred to Dublin Corporation?

I am not as familiar with the actual location as the Deputy but a portion of the canal has been transferred to Dublin Corporation; perhaps that is the portion the Deputy is talking about.
