Caravan park standards and landscape protection

Summary

The Minister said local authorities can regulate caravan sites through planning and sanitary laws, alongside Bord Fáilte registration, and considers existing powers adequate.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action he proposes to take to ensure that caravan parks are laid out and maintained in such a way as to avoid the defacing of the landscape at seaside resorts and inland beauty spots.

Comment on this

This is primarily a matter for local authorities. They have wide powers to control camping sites under both planning and sanitary legislation and to require necessary standards to be maintained. This is in addition to the controls exercised by Bord Fáilte by way of registration of such sites. Overall, I believe that the existing statutory powers are adequate.
