andMr. MacSharry asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of people employed in his Department in each of the last four years; the number of people employed in each of the same years without having taken part in a public competition; and the number of people employed in the past six months without having taken part in a public competition.

Comment on this

As the information required by the Deputies is in the form of a tabular statement, it is proposed, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Department of the Public Service recruitment during the period 1 January 1973 to 31 December, 1976.

For the purpose of this reply, the term "employed" has been taken to mean "recruited".

Column (a): Total numbers recruited.

Column (b): Numbers recruited otherwise than by public competition.

(These were mainly part-time language teachers, messenger and cleaning staff and consultants).

Civil Service Commission

Column (a): Total numbers recruited.

Column (b): Numbers recruited otherwise than by public competition.

(These were all messengers).
