Motor vehicle imports

Summary

Ireland imported 86,936 road motor vehicles in the year to December 1976, up from 64,394 the previous year. Brennan asked about domestic manufacturing and plans to increase local assembly; Bruton said manufacturing figures and the policy question were outside his remit.

asked the Taoiseach the number of motor vehicles imported in the latest period of 12 months for which figures are available.

Am I safe in assuming that this is an increase and that there is a corresponding decline in the number of vehicles manufactured in the State?

Comment on this

I cannot comment on the number manufactured in the State. That would be a separate question. The number imported this year is an increase on the number imported last year, which was 64,394.

Has the Minister any plans to ensure that this imbalance will be redressed and that more assembly will take place at home?

That is a question appertaining to policy which would be for another Minister.
