Marley Association School Proposal

Summary

The Minister said he would meet the Marley and District School Association as soon as possible but would wait to hear its case for a multi-denominational school before forming an opinion. Andrews pressed for the Government’s policy on multi-denominational education, but the Chair ruled the question separate and repeatedly called the next question.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has received a request for an interview from the Marley and District School Association, County Dublin: and when the Association can expect to have the request granted.

Peter Barry Mr. P. Barry Fine Gael

I have received a request for an interview from the Marley and District School Association, together with some literature relating to the association's proposal for the establishment of a multi-denominational national school in the Marley area.

I have had many requests from various individuals and associations for interviews. I cannot, at the moment, say when it would be possible for me to see the Marley and District School Association but I will do so as soon as possible.

The Deputy asked a question which was quite irrelevant.

Comment on this

I want to ask the Minister what I consider to be a relevant question: when the Minister meets this worthy group will he tell us what his attitude will be to them in relation to what they seek and particularly in relation to the education they wish for their children?

Comment on this
Peter Barry Mr. P. Barry Fine Gael

I think I should wait to hear what they have to say before I form any opinion.

You may not make that case now, Deputy. This is Question Time.

The Deputy knows that speeches are not in order. Question No. 5, please.

Comment on this

These are questions which the Minister is avoiding and you are conspiring with him to avoid.

Seán Treacy An Ceann Comhairle Labour Party

That is a disgraceful allegation.
