River Shannon Warning Signs

Summary

The Minister plans to replace warning notices with language-independent symbols before next tourist season, which he considers more suitable than multilingual signs.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the large number of continental tourists using the River Shannon and a number of deaths in recent years of such persons on the river, he will ensure the erection of a number of multilingual signs before next season.

It is hoped to replace the existing warning notices on the Shannon navigation by self-explanatory warning symbols before the start of the main tourist season next year. They will be intelligible to all visitors, regardless of language. Symbols are preferable to multi-lingual notices on account of the large mix of nationalities on the navigation.
