Labour force aged 15 to 19

Summary

May 1975 estimates put 132,000 people aged 15–19 in the labour force, with another 16,200 seeking work for the first time. Horgan questioned how job programmes could be planned without better figures, and the Taoiseach said a census two years earlier would have helped.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons in the labour force who are aged between 15 and 19 on the latest date for which complete figures or reasonable estimates are available.

The most recent period for which reliable information of the kind requested by the Deputy is available is May, 1975, when the first sample Labour Force Survey was taken. The estimates from that survey show that the labour force aged from 15 to 19 years at that time was 132,000; there were, in addition in that age group, some 16,200 persons seeking work for the first time.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not accept that it is almost impossible to plan job creation programmes for young people if you do not know how many of them there are in the labour force?

John Lynch The Taoiseach Fianna Fáil

If we had had a census two years ago we would have a better chance.
