Capital expenditure on colleges

Summary

The Minister lists capital expenditure for seven colleges from 1970 onward. Horgan says the figures support reconsidering the urgency of designation; Wilson replies that designation concerns the HEA’s responsibility for assessing expenditure, not capital spending.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of capital expenditure by his Department on each of the colleges of education from 1970 to the latest date for which figures are available.

Would the Minister not agree that those figures might suggest to him the value of reconsidering his statement made in relation to an earlier question, that there is no urgency about the question of designation of these institutions?

Comment on this

As the Deputy is aware, the question of designation is one of allotting the responsibility for the assessment of expenditure to the Higher Education Authority. I do not think that has anything to do with capital expenditure on the colleges.
