Prison visiting committee reports

Summary

Browne asked about access to visiting committee reports; Lalor said they are included in annual prison reports, with the 1975 report available and the 1976 report due by year-end.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a person wishing to inspect the reports referred to in section 3 (4) of the Prisons (Visiting Committees) Act, 1925, was informed that he could do so only by making a visit in person to each of the places of detention; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am so aware. The visiting committees' reports are, however, included in the annual reports on prisons. As indicated in reply to Questions Nos. 41 and 42 on today's Order Paper, the Annual Report for 1975 was presented to the House on 8th November, 1977, and may be purchased from the Stationery Office. The 1976 report will be published by the end of the year.
