University entrance points system
Collins asked whether the university points system was pressuring examination candidates; Wilson said he was unaware of pressure on examiners and that the question referred to examiners, not examinees. The exchange became a brief dispute over the wording, with Collins saying the Minister understood his intent and Wilson standing by the wording he received.
asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the unnecessary pressures being put on post-primary leaving certificate and matriculation examiners by the points system being used by university authorities as an entrance selection method; and if he will make a full statement on the matter.

I am not aware that any pressures are being put on post-primary leaving certificate examiners by the "points system" being used by university authorities as an entrance selection method. I do not have responsibility for the matriculation examinations.

I would be delighted to answer the question if I had been asked about examinees because I have a special interest in that question.

I want to make it quite clear to the House that I got my officials to examine this carefully because I thought it might refer to examinees. I have no doubt in my mind—and I got several people to read the question—that the word "examiners" appeared on the question as it was put to me.
