National school enrolment restrictions

Summary

The Minister said no changes to national school enrolment regulations are proposed, assuring the House that current admission practices will continue.

asked the Minister for Education if he has considered the suggestions in relation to possible restrictions in national school enrolment made in the report published in Oideas 17; and if he proposes to adopt any of them.

Comment on this

Suggestions on the lines mentioned have been considered from time to time in my Department but there are no proposals for amending the present regulations governing the enrolment of pupils in national schools.

Comment on this

Can the teachers concerned take it definitely there is no fear that entry will be restricted to five-year-olds, and can parents take encouragement from the Minister's reply that their children will continue to be admitted on the same basis as they are admitted at present?

Comment on this

The Deputy and the House can be so assured.
