Public ownership of schools

Summary

Horgan proposed public ownership or minister-appointed trustees for publicly funded schools. Wilson said this was neither necessary nor desirable, despite the precedent of community schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider bringing into public ownership or trustee-ship all schools in receipt of public money in order to ensure the continuity and rational organisation of education in Ireland.

Comment on this

I do not consider such a proposal to be necessary or desirable.

Does the Minister not agree that there is a precedent for this in the case of all community schools whose trustees are appointed by the Minister for Education? Would he not consider doing something like this in respect of all schools which are in receipt of public money?

Comment on this

I am pleased with the community school and comprehensive school development but the answer to Question No. 10 remains the same: I do not consider the proposal mentioned in the Deputy's question necessary or desirable.
