Primary school types and PE facilities

Summary

Kenny asked for the number of primary schools by teacher count and which had basic physical education facilities. Wilson said a school-classification table would be circulated, but the Department could not provide the requested facilities breakdown; he noted that schools generally included play spaces and other amenities.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of each type of primary school viz., one teacher, two teacher et cetera, in the country; and the numbers of each that have basic facilities for physical education instruction, such as surfaced area with a minimum of equipment.

John P. Wilson Minister for Education (Mr. Wilson) Fianna Fáil

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report a tabular statement giving particulars of national schools classified by teacher numbers.

It is not possible from the records of the Department to provide in the form requested by the Deputy a breakdown of the facilities available in schools for physical education.

It may be stated, however, that in recent years provision has been generally made in the planning of all schools for paved play spaces, ball courts and, except in the case of smaller schools, general purpose rooms, and where such amenities are requested in connection with older schools their provision is given such favourable consideration as conditions may warrant.

Following is the statement:

Number of National Schools Classified by Teacher Numbers.

NOTES:

(1) Above data relate to September 1977 and may be subject to some slight revision.

(2) Data exclude special schools and classes.
