Independent oversight of Garda appointments

Summary

Browne asked whether an independent appointments body, like the LAC or Civil Service Commissioners, had been considered for Garda and judicial appointments. The Minister responded that Ministers face allegations regardless, prompting further exchanges about the adequacy of his answer and the parliamentary question process.

This kind of charge has been made for years about other Departments. Why is it that we never established something on the lines of the LAC or the Civil Service Commissioners for appointments to the Garda, the Judiciary and so on? Was that ever considered, so that the Minister would not be subjected to this kind of possibly unintended innuendo?

Comment on this

The Deputy probably knows a lot better than I would know, and indeed better than many other Deputies would know, that Ministers are open to all sorts of accusations and allegations irrespective of how ill-founded they are.
