Compensation for Celtic Sea herring ban

Summary

Deasy asked about compensation and the fishermen who had benefited after the Celtic Sea ban. The Minister said none had been paid because the EEC proposals had not been adopted, and could not say when a scheme would begin.

asked the Minister for Fisheries the amount of money which has been provided by the EEC as compensation for Irish fishermen deprived of their normal herring catches following the EEC Celtic Sea ban; and the number of Irish fishermen who have benefited.

Comment on this

: No compensation has been paid to Irish fishermen for loss of earnings incurred by the Celtic Sea Herring ban as the EEC Commission's proposals for such compensation have not yet been adopted by the Council of Ministers.

Comment on this

: The Minister for Fisheries told us six months ago that within a short time such a scheme would be brought in. Has the Minister any idea of when the scheme will come into operation?
