Irish unity and responsibility

Summary

Harte asked whether the British Government should declare support for Irish unity and what proposals the Taoiseach had, arguing that uniting the Irish people was Ireland’s responsibility. The Chair ruled it a separate question and moved on.

Would the Taoiseach ask the British Government to make a statement declaring their interest in the unity of Ireland? Might I ask the Taoiseach to declare his interest in the unity of Ireland and what proposals he has in mind for this?

Joseph Brennan An Ceann Comhairle Fianna Fáil

That is a separate question.

Comment on this

It arises out of the Taoiseach's reply.

It does not.

Comment on this

Is it not our responsibility to unite the Irish people and not to ask the British Government to do this? Surely that is an insincere position.
