Canal legislation and CIE–OPW discussions

Summary

The Minister said legislation on canal development would take considerable time to prepare and hoped CIE and the Office of Public Works would meanwhile cooperate. Members questioned whether discussions were under way; the Minister believed they were and said he wanted them to take place.

When may we expect the legislation which the Minister promised the House?

Comment on this

It will be a considerable time before the legislation in relation to this is ready. It is very involved, strange as it may seem. It will take a while before we can formulate it. In the meantime I hope CIE and the Office of Public Works can work out some type of arrangement to co-operate in the development of the canals.

Is the Minister aware that the Minister of State at the Department of Finance said he was not aware of such discussions?

It would be my desire that such discussions should take place.
