Gaeltacht population decline

Summary

Begley sought Gaeltacht population figures through December 1978 and asked what the Government would do about the decline. Lalor cited the 1971 census, which recorded 71,521 people, down 3,096 from 1966; he said updated figures would follow the recent census and disputed that a current decline had been established.

den Taoiseach cén t-ardú nó laghdú a tháinig ar dhaonra na Gaeltachta ó Aibreán 1966 go dtí 31 Nollaig 1978.

Patrick J. Lalor Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach (Mr. P. Lalor) Fianna Fáil

Is ón daonáireamh, Aibreán 1971, atá an t-eolas is déanaí le fáil. B'é 71,521 an líon daoine a áiríodh ag an daonáireamh sin, san nGaeltacht mar a mhínítear sin le hÓrduithe na Limistéar Gaeltachta, 1956, 1967 agus 1974. B'é 74,617 daonra an limistéir chéanna ag an daonáireamh i 1966—sin laghdú 3,096.

Is í an cheist a bhí agamsa ná an 31 Nollaig 1978; níorbh í 31 Nollaig 1971; sin seacht mbliain ó shin.

Tá fhios ag an Teachta nach raibh aon daonáireamh i 1976 agus níl mise responsible for that.

Nach bhfuil na figiúirí do dhaonra na Gaeltachta ag Roinn na Gaeltachta? Níl ar an Aire ach cúpla noiméad a chaitheamh ar an dteileafóin agus an scéal a thabhairt chucu agus beidh na figiúirí aige. If the Minister is interested in getting the real figures he has only to ring Roinn na Gaeltachta to get them.

Beidh daonra na limistéar Gaeltachta le fáil tar éis an daonáirimh a tógadh le déanaí. Beidh na torthaí againn go luath sa bhliain seo chugainn agus na figiúirí ceart againn ansin.

Cad tá ceapaithe ag an Rialtas chun an ísliú a leigheas? Could the Minister say what efforts the Government will make to correct the decline in population?

I do not accept that there has been a decline. Obviously, the Deputy is satisfied that over the last of the previous five years, up to the time when the last census should have been held, there was a decline, but I think that question can be pursued when we get the results of the recent census.
