Urban environmental hazards research

Summary

The Taoiseach said the science board supports research on air and noise pollution, but not yet traffic-vibration damage; despite a 20 per cent budget cut, the programme will continue. Question No. 9 was postponed.

asked the Taoiseach if the National Board for Science and Technology have a programme of research to evaluate urban environmental hazards in relation to (1) air pollution, (2) noise pollution and (3) damage to buildings and property by vibrations of heavy traffic, if not, if he will request the board to establish such a programme.

Comment on this

The NBST are currently supporting a broad programme of research activities in environmental sciences, which covers areas (1) and (2) of the Deputy's question. Area (3) is not yet a priority area in the board's programme.

Comment on this

In view of the fact that the National Board for Science and Technology's budget is being cut by 20 per cent for the current year could the Taoiseach say whether this programme will now be at risk?

Comment on this

The budget makes provision for the continuance of this programme.
