Language of ministerial answers
White objected to receiving Irish answers to questions asked in English; the Ceann Comhairle said Ministers may answer in either language and noted that translation is available.
Would it not make more sense when I put down questions in English if I were replied to in English? I have put down questions in Irish previously and I have been answered in Irish. I accept that. Surely when I put down questions in English it makes more sense if I am answered in English.

Níl feidhm ar bith agamsa faoi cheist a fhreagairt i nGaeilge nó i mBéarla. The Minister may answer in English or Irish. Ba mhaith liom a rá go bhfuil aistríúchán le fáil ar an trealamh cluaise. There is a translation available on the earphones.

I appreciate that, and I also appreciate your good Irish. Particularly when the Fianna Fáil Government are talking about two traditions in this country—and some of us were educated in Northern Ireland and I appreciate that my Irish is not as fluent as that of the Minister——
