Consumer price index changes

Summary

L’Estrange sought price changes for each CPI item since May 1977; Moore circulated a statement, after which L’Estrange challenged the Government over rising prices and unmet manifesto promises on price control, and Moore said he had already given an all-embracing reply.

asked the Taoiseach the actual percentage change in each item included in the consumer price index from mid-May 1977 to the latest available date.

: With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information.

Following is the statement:

Percentage Price Changes between mid-May 1977 and mid-August 1980.

* Seasonally adjusted.

: Will the Minister deny that prices have increased by more than 70 per cent, despite the promises given in the manifesto of 1977? What has happened to those promises? Does the Minister agree that prices have not been controlled by consumer legislation as promised in the manifesto?

Comment on this

: I have given the Deputy an all-embracing reply.

Comment on this

: I should like to get the reply to my supplementary for the people of Donegal who are asking these questions. Will the Minister give an all-embracing reply for the benefit of the people of Donegal?

Comment on this

: Donegal apparently is very much in the Deputy's mind.
