Constitutional prohibition on divorce

Summary

Dr. Browne asked whether polling support for removing the constitutional divorce prohibition would prompt a policy review. The Taoiseach reiterated the Government’s existing position; Mr. Horgan pressed him to clarify it, but no further detail was given.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the findings of the latest opinion poll which indicate that a majority of the people in the Republic would support the dropping of the constitutional prohibition on divorce; and if the Government are prepared to review their policy on this matter in view of this strong indication of public opinion.

I am aware of the survey referred to by the Deputy. The Government's position is as indicated by me in reply to a parliamentary question on 15 April 1980.

Is the Taoiseach effectively saying that he is passing the buck on this issue to some future Government which will have more courage and compassion?

A question, please, not argument.

Is the Taoiseach passing the buck?

If we were passing it on to some future Government we would be passing it to ourselves for the foreseeable future.

Comment on this

That is hysterical not historical.

Is the Taoiseach saying that it is not a question of whether divorce will be introduced but when it will be introduced?

Comment on this

I have already outlined the Government's position with regard to divorce.

Does the Taoiseach believe that divorce here is necessary or not?
