Estimated job losses in 1980

Summary

The Minister said comprehensive job-loss figures were unavailable, though manufacturing figures were expected in about two months. The remaining questions were deferred, and the Chair said he would respond to a request to raise Question No. 15 on the Adjournment.

asked the Minister for Labour the estimated total number of job losses in 1980.

Comment on this

The requirement to notify job losses is confined to situations where the Redundancy Payments Acts and the Protection of Employment Act apply. Official information on job losses is, therefore, incomplete. One sector where reliable information on job losses is compiled, however, is manufacturing industry, and I expect figures on the net job situation in that sector for 1980 to be available in about two months' time.
